I remember years ago, when I saved up all my tip money and made the jump and bought a DSLR, that I thought I knew all about. Okay, I knew I didn’t know anything about it, but I wanted to, so I figured I’ll just fake it till I make it! I told myself this camera was just a hobby, and that I wouldn’t go anywhere with it, and that I wanted to focus on my career. Well, one thing lead to another and here I am LOVING capturing memories of my clients, and building a small business! It is definitely trying at times, but I love being able to capture memories for my clients! I grew up in a family that everyone was obsessed with cameras- everyone. My mom and her sisters all had cameras, and I always just thought it was about the camera. But, it was more about the memories that the camera froze in place, to last forever! While browsing through Pinterest, (Love Pinterest!) I saw a small business owner write a letter to herself. It was to the fresh faced her, who was just starting out as an entrepreneur. I began to think what would a letter to myself say? I then sat down, pencil in hand, and began writing out that letter, and I want to share it with you all! Dear Newbie Camera Owner Amy, I know you just made a huge leap and purchased a brand spanking new DSLR! I also know your so excited to take awesome pictures, of EVERYTHING! I can see you sitting on your parent's wrap around front porch, playing with the settings and taking pictures of the dogs. I can see in your eyes, the creative parts of your brain working hard to capture the most perfect image! But, I have some advice for you!
First, do not throw away that manual for your camera! I repeat, DO NOT throw away the manual! You will totally need it when you finally decide to learn what all those dials and buttons are on your camera. Yep, I can admit for you, that you don't know the "science" part of your art. You are just winging it, and while your getting okay-ish pictures, you could be capturing images at such a better quality! You will need that manual to help you achieve those better quality pictures, that you long to get. To be successful in even taking pictures of your family, you will need many aspects, but the "science" behind your camera will help you so much! Now that we are on the same page about learning your camera, find a mentor, or someone that can act as a mentor. Someone to take you under your wing, help you see the picture from different angles. We all can have the same set up in front of us, but as artists, we can perceive it and capture it in so many ways. That is what makes us an artist, Don't be afraid to learn from other photographers, don't be afraid to get all the details, don't get discouraged by other's art. Most importantly, don’t loose sight of why Photography is one of the arts you love! One day, in the distant future, your art will help pull you out of a fairly dark place in your life, a place where you are worried sick and paranoid over a fragile newborn, where you feel like your failing. This art will give you something to create, something to begin to see the beauty In again, something to help you feel you again. With much love, the future you PS: your kids are going to be typical photographer’s kids and not cooperate as soon as they see you pull your camera out. But, they’ll love Snapchat!
